Louis Wain (1860-1939) did more for cats than just draw them. He was president of the National Cat Club, advocated proper care and kindness towards stray and injured animals and was a major factor in making the cat a popular household pet. Wain was not able to maintain his successful career. He was a poor businessman and World War l created a paper shortage. There was no longer a demand for his work. However, Wain lived a long life always drawing cats and working for their welfare. He died in poverty and obscurity in 1939 but his art lives on.

"He invented a cat style, a cat society, a whole cat world. English cats that do not look like Louis Wain cats are ashamed of themselves."   H.G.Wells
